This View of Life: Completing the Darwinian Revolution

It is widely understood that Charles of Life Kindle #213 Darwins theory of evolution completely revolutionized the study of biology Yet according to David Sloan Wilson the Darwinian revolution wont be truly complete until it is applied broadlyto everything associated with the words human culture and policyIn a se. DS Wilson is a pioneer so I wanted to like this book But I didn t It contains a few good examples of how neglecting evolutionary biology in general and group selection in particular can be detrimental when we design social institutions But the book has a pervasive flawWilson often uncritically accepts other people s social scientific research to illustrate points he wants to make One example is citing The Spirit Level the conclusions of which are ideologically driven from cherry picked data Another example involves citing a study about stereotype threat where subtle changes to how exams were taken miraculously led to all ethnic groups performing similarly This study like a few others he cites doesn t pass the smell test but he reports it as if it s obviously true As anyone who has followed the reproducibility problem in social science knows these cute results almost always fail to replicate Instead they often reflect pervasive p hacking and ideological bias among journal referees in fields like sociologyWhile the book does contain a few insights I d recommend the following two books instead The Secret of Our Success by Joe Henrich and The 10000 Year Explosion by Cochran and Harpending
