As millions of viewers tune in to watch the countdown there's nothing to indicate that what they're seeing is a prerecorded show Terrorists have taken over Launch Control at Cape Can. Not a bad thriller certainly better than the blurb which sounds deadly dull A paean to the space program but filled with lots of details without getting bogged down Characters are reasonably well sketched for a thriller and it s told from multiple POVs so you get in the character s heads Keeps the action going until the final page

A broken foot knows about the danger to his crew Unknown to anyone he's sneaked into the restricted zone And now it's up to him to stop the clock before the countdown reachesIgnitio. Published in 1997 this one is just barely interesting enough to keep you turning the pages The setting is Cape Canaveral and the shuttle Atlantis is being readied for a space mission The main pilot an impetuous guy called Iceberg is out with a foot injury encased in a cast and a substitute is in charge of his regular crew He comes to watch the launch but wants to do it alone and decides to hike into the adjacent swampland to get a close private viewing By now hiking into the swamp with a cast on his foot I m wondering if impetuous is the right word for itMeanwhile terrorists are infiltrating the launch area in hopes of holding the shuttle and the mission directors hostage for a ransom The killing starts NASA security is held at bay while this plays out in the fear that rash defensive action would endanger the hostages and the shuttle has already been rigged with explosives to be set off remotely by the terrorist leader if anything goes wrong with his plan Iceberg seems to be immune to that limitation and proceeds to strike back bad foot and allAs the story unfolds it becomes and implausible somewhat like Die Hard without the charms of Bruce Willis In fact this story seems to have been written with the hope of getting a movie contract I looked but I didn t find one Most of the characters are sketchy stereotypes at best especially the hero who comes off as a combination of Superman and Dumb and Dumber As it proceeds I came to the conclusion that the body count and property damage would have been reasonably minimal if he had simply gone to sleep in the swamp and missed the whole thing As it was the entire launch area is on the verge of being destroyed while the death toll rises much of it as a direct or indirect result of his actionsLike Die Hard the hero could have been stopped dead in his tracks and for the same reason that the police in Die Hard and NASA security in this one were stymied All the villain had to do was to start killing hostages until the hero surrendered He has already killed a couple of them along with a host of security people almost without provocation so it wouldn t bother him too much to kill As I mentioned this one is a mild page turner and the action is interesting for those who like their thrillers on the shallow side The writing is not uite at the professional level and could have used better editing and another run through before publication How hard could that be There were two authors working on this thingI rate this one at a disappointing two stars out of five It was a hair below just okay

Averal and are threatening to blow up the Atlantis in less than three hours unless their demands are met Only Colonel Iceberg Friese the mission's former commander invalided out with. A good uick read as long as you didn t think too much about the storyStrengths the authors did their research about the Kennedy Space Center in Florida during the Shuttle program Lots of details about the Launch Control Center LCC the Vehicle Assembly Building VAB and the Fixed Service Structure and control arms all seemed consistentWeaknesses when they got to Mr Phillips escaping in a MH 60 and using Stinger missiles I uickly got confused view spoilerWhile Nicole Senator Boorman and Mr Phillips entered through the big cabin doors Mr Phillips shot the FBI agent posing as the pilot from inside of the helicopter and pushed him out of one of the front doors somehow opening it Nicole took his place and Mr Phillips sat in the other front seat It made it sound as if the doors were openremoved but I suspect that this only referred to the main cabin doors not the doors next to the pilot and co pilot And then Mr Phillips is manipulating a 5 long Stinger missile launcher from that front seat Also you have the exhaust from the launch motor in the enclosed space at the front of the cabin I could not contain all of that dissonance in my imagination hide spoiler

LameMy standards for an actionadventure type of book like these are pretty low and this one managed to sink lower Completely implausible in way too many places to keep you in the story at all A cast of cardboard cliché characters round it outOnly the criminal's get away plan was at all novelGuess I should have clued in when the reviews on the back were 'advance praise' even their reactions likely would have b

An interesting story with great narration and strong dialogues is the key of a successful book The hero is a kind of superman and Bruce Willis would be great in the main role The relation of the two brothers should be different

A space shuttle is hijacked while still on the ground A rather dysmal an actionthriller Yawn
