Ating between a distant future and a distant past converging on the present with characters from one story being reincarnated in another The Volume 10 Sun PDF #186stories over pages Sun In AD a soldier named Harima is punished by being given the visage of a wolf Rescued by a mysterious old woman he is tormented by nightmares and gradu. This review covers Volumes 10 and 11 as they re of the same story The story in these volumes flip flops a bit between the past and the future the past about a man whos forced into becoming a proto furry and helping spirits of the wilderness while resisting Buddhism The future deals with an evil vaguely Catholic religionat times feeling a bit like Friends cult in 20th Century Boys unsurprising as Naoki Urasawa is a huge fan of this seriesThere are the few usual Tezuka touches like Popeye looking characters a few recognizable characters from his star system and the occasional fourth wall joke None of these really detract from the story for me but others might find them annoyingIf I have one criticism and this criticism is something that I can apply to other volumes of Phoenix its that many of the women are drawn and behave similarly That is with big teary eyes and a submissive worried personality I wasnt a fan of some of the gore either be it the main characters face lift which other than talking with spirits doesnt really do much for the story or a later segment where a woman whos immortal for some reason is shot up into a charred corpseI should note that the English edition is a bit buggered up in addition to the artwork being flipped so the book reads left to right the few color pages in the Japanese version are black and white here This wouldn t be an issue if the book were only 15 but physical editions of Phoenix often sell for uite a bit of money

Phoenix Volume 10 Sun Part One

Ally senses the spirit of Bando Suguru a st century agent who fights on behalf of banished humans Sun is the longest chapter in the Phoenix series and its structure is threefold Harima's story in th century Japan interweaves with that taking place in the st century while another tale of a spiritual battle bridges both past and future.. I m down to the last 2 volumes of Phoenix And they re a double volume The story of a wolf faced man Japanese nature gods and their fights with new and sinister Buddhist deities Beautiful story driving illustration I think the Future story will be a little bit weaker but oh man I do love it Devouring

Considered by many the peak 10 Sun Kindle #212 of Osamu Tezuka's artistic achievement and called his life work by the author PHOENIX is made up complex stories linked by the presence of the mythical bird an immortal guarden Phoenix Volume eBook #207 of the universal life force Read in order the separate stories jump across time altern. Like with a couple of other story arcs within the Phoenix series this story spans both past and future with about 14oo years between them Overall a solid installment in the Phoenix series with religion as a major theme This is one of the rare instances in literature I ve seen where Buddhism was seen as a negative force How is that possible you ask well read this book and see it actually makes sense as Buddhism is NOT a religion native to Japan

Tezuka depicted Buddhism as the dark force However it was not the Buddha nor the Boddhisatvas or any of the followers that were the bad guys it was the bunch of deity dudes the devas or tennou or Thiên vương and th

This has become my favourite Phoenix book so far Both stories the historical and the future one are intertwined and both are very good There's also an unusual insight into how Buddhism was spreading in Japan by dirty ways oppressing the ancient spirits and gods
